New Places to Go..

This is a selection of places that I have not used in my compilation of day tours, but still worth visiting should you have the time.

Ypres Area.

 

Tyne Cott has a new visitors center, this is a nice addition to this cemetary.

 

The passchendaele museum is a good place to visit in Zonnebeke - follow the web link from passchendaele page.

 

We have found a great place for a cuppa or beer near Tyne Cott, its called WaterFields 1914-18 - follow the road from the car park and at the minor road - left back to the main and right takes you around to the front of the cemetary - follow this one and look for the road signs    .waterfields-sign

 

Yorkshire Trench - This is the escavated trench system first brought to our attention on a channel 4 documentary about a local group know as the diggers. The site has been re dug, with all new sanbagging and is a great insight to what a trench was like. See the pictures.

 

Talbot house - Poperinge ~ Talbot House was owned by Army Chaplains Neville Talbot and Philip clayton aka “Tubby” It was a refuge from the war and known more as the soldiers club. The upper room houses a splendid chapel and the old hopstore was the concert hall. The gardens are described as a haven of peace.

 The house is open daily 10- 12 & 2 - 5, small charge to enter - this has now got a new addition to the building, showing what used to be the concert hall. Also a new display in the new entrance shows life as it was during the war. I feel the atmosphere of Toc house has been lost - but if you have never been, still go.

 

ST GEORGE'S MEMORIAL CHURCH

St George's Memorial Church in Ieper was built in 1929 in memory of soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient. The small school attached to the Church was known as Eton College and was built to provide a British education for the children of CWGC staff. On 21 April this year the 75th anniversary of the laying of the church's foundation stone will be celebrated.

The church is a popular place to visit for many pilgrims to the battlefields and all are welcome. However, the Rev Ray Jones would welcome prior notice if large groups or school parties plan to visit the church so that he can make preparations.
