This was the first battle of the war, on the 23rd August 1914, for the British Expiditionary Force.
The faced invading German armies, along a line running through the northern outskirts of the Belgium town of Mons.
The Germans attacked at 0830 and by mid afternoon the British were forced to with draw. British casualties were 1600 and the Germans lost between 3000 and 15000.
