The battle of Cambrai began well, on the 20th November 1917, when the 3rd British army launched a surprise attack on General Marwitz’s German 2nd Army, using almost 400 tanks.

This was the first time in history, so many tanks had been used together.

On the first day, a six mile wide gap had been made in the Hindenburg line, south west of Cambrai. However, within two weeks the British were back were they started, with casualties of around 40,000 on both sides.

Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow..... In Flanders fields....
